    Jean Altena

Jean DeJong was born in Molkwerum, Holland on September 22 1929. She grew up on a farm, where she enjoyed going to school and sewing (which would come in handy later in life). In her early 20's, she took up writing with a pen-pal who was serving in Indonesia. His name was Flippus (Philip) Altena, and after he returned to Holland after his term, they fell in love and were married on March 13, 1952.
Soon after marriage, and full of doubt, Philip and Jean (Pakke and Beppe to me) moved to Canada with the blessings of their parents. They lived for short periods in Jarvis and Caledonia, after which they settled on Mount Hope. They then moved to Caledonia once again for their retirement years. Pakke and Beppe were blessed with seven children; Jessica, Eileen, Anita (my mom), Margaret, Joanne, Bart and Esther. She also had 17 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Beppe had a great love for her family, the Lord and for life. She was very warm-hearted, full of laughter, and always at the ready to help those in need. She volunteered for many church events and activities as well as the Bibles For Missions store.
Almost 2 years ago, (on the same day I had my second seizure actually) Beppe was diagnosed with brain cancer. She recovered well enough to return home, although she could not walk and was confined to a wheelchair. In August 2006 the cancer came back, and she was back in the hospital, where she would stay for the rest of her days.
When Beppe was in the hospital, she would never complain about how she was feeling, but asked how others were doing, and made sure her grandchildren got a candy or chocolate that was stocked up at her bedside.
Beppe passed away on October 5, 2006 and laid to rest October 7 2006 in York, Ontario. We love you Beppe, and will miss you deeply.

Matthew 25:21 - "Well done, thou good and faithful servant:.. Enter Thou into the Joy of the Lord"
